Christian Boulanger and Mathieu Allante are two Jura natives who spent over 15 years working alongside the Labet family before establishing their own domaine. Having gradually assembled small parcels of old vines across the southern Jura, they now work around 4.2 hectares, combining biodynamic viticulture with a distinctly uncompromising approach to natural winemaking. Their vineyards include historic plots, some rescued from abandonment, with a particular interest in old vines and distinctive local terroirs. Fermentations are spontaneous, cellar interventions are kept to a minimum and the wines are aged in old oak barrels without fining or filtration. Despite their relatively small production, the pair have quickly become two of the most interesting names in the contemporary Jura scene.
La Barde comes from a remarkable parcel of approximately 90 year old vines in Rotalier, one of the southern Jura's most highly regarded vineyard sites. Planted on blue Lias marl over Bathonian limestone, the vineyard produces a blend of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Savagnin. The Chardonnay provides precision and structure, while Savagnin brings an additional layer of spice, depth and complexity. Fermented spontaneously in 228 litre oak barrels, the wine spends 24 months ageing in the same vessels, developing considerable texture and concentration. Expect ripe orchard fruit, grilled citrus, toasted nuts and savoury mineral notes, with a powerful palate balanced by impressive freshness. A serious, old vine Jura Chardonnay blend with plenty of personality.
