Christian Allante and Matthieu Boulanger are two friends who spent over 15 years working together at Domaine Labet in the southern Jura before setting up their own project. Starting with a handful of parcels acquired from local growers, they have gradually assembled around 3.2 hectares of vineyards between Rotalier and Gizia. Working biodynamically, they have a particular interest in old vines, forgotten grape varieties and the preservation of Jura's viticultural heritage. Their approach is uncompromisingly natural, with spontaneous fermentations, no additions in the cellar and extended ageing in old oak barrels. The results are wonderfully individual wines that combine the generosity of the Jura with plenty of energy and tension.
Amalgamé is a particularly unusual field blend from the Vigne au Daim parcel in Gizia, where several varieties are planted together, including the exceptionally rare Petit Béclan, a near-forgotten Jura grape. Comprising six varieties, the grapes are completely destemmed and co-fermented before spending 12 months ageing in 300-litre old oak barrels. The Petit Béclan brings a rustic, slightly wild character to the blend, while Gamay, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir contribute layers of red and darker berry fruit. Expect ripe cherry, blackcurrant and wild herbs, with a firm, grippy structure and refreshing acidity. An intriguing expression of the Jura, and a brilliant example of what happens when two experienced winemakers decide to do things a little differently.
