Château Beynat is a long established family estate in Castillon, founded in 1917 and today led by Vianney de Tastes, who represents the fourth generation to work these hillsides on the eastern edge of Saint Emilion. The domaine farms around fourteen hectares across the limestone plateau and south facing slopes above Sainte Colombe, an area known for its rich clay limestone soils and relatively high altitude. Vianney converted the vineyards to organic farming in 2011 and to full biodynamics soon after, driven by a focus on soil regeneration, closed loop composting and low impact treatments. Vineyard work is entirely manual, with careful canopy management and low yields aimed at maintaining ripeness and balance. In the cellar, fermentations proceed with indigenous yeasts in concrete or small vats, extraction is gentle and precise, and élevage relies mainly on concrete and large neutral wood, allowing the natural freshness and clarity of Castillon fruit to lead.

Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux 2023 is drawn from several parcels on the limestone crest above Sainte Colombe, where clay rich topsoils over hard calcaire provide both water retention and firm mineral structure. The 2023 season in Castillon saw a cool, steady spring, good flowering and a warm but not excessive summer, with intermittent July and August rainfall supporting even ripening and healthy acidity. Merlot was harvested by hand in small lots at full physiological ripeness, then destemmed and fermented naturally in concrete vats with careful remontage to protect fruit purity. The wine was aged in a mix of concrete and large older barrels for around twelve months, preserving the limestone driven tension of the terroir. It shows dark plum, blackberry, wild herbs and graphite, with supple tannins, lifted acidity and a clean, mineral line that reflects the plateau’s chalky subsoil.
