Domaine Belargus was created by Ivan Massonnat to revive and celebrate the historic crus of Anjou Noir, assembling an extraordinary collection of monopoles and terroirs once prized by the region’s greatest growers. The domaine centres on Chenin grown in the schist, quartz and volcanic soils that shape the hillsides of Savennières, Quarts de Chaume and the Layon valley. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with meticulous canopy management, low yields and detailed parcel by parcel harvesting. Vinifications rely on indigenous yeasts, gentle pressing and patient ageing in large neutral vessels to reveal precision, tension and the layered mineral expression that Chenin achieves on these ancient slopes.
Savennieres Rucheres Monopole 2021 comes from a walled parcel of old vines rooted in pure schist with thin topsoils that naturally restrict vigour and intensify mineral expression. The cool and delicate 2021 vintage accentuated the site’s precision, with slow ripening and low yields resulting in fruit of exceptional refinement. Manual harvesting was conducted in successive small picks to select the healthiest and most balanced clusters. Fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts followed by ageing in large older barrels to maintain clarity. The wine shows a tightly drawn profile of citrus peel, fennel, almond skin and wet stone carried by firm acidity and a long, resonant finish.
