From just eight rows of Chardonnay in the Kriegsheimer Rosengarten, planted on loess and loam with gravel and iron-rich deposits, this is a tiny-production and seriously ambitious white from Jan Raumland. Fermented slowly in 100% new 228L barriques, the oak is remarkably well integrated, adding depth without masking the wine’s energy. White fruit, citrus and green apple lead the way, with subtle minty spice and a finely reductive edge. The palate is dense and textural yet taut, driven by striking salinity and freshness through a long, complex finish. A powerful yet precise Chardonnay that shows just how exciting Germany can be for the variety.
