Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes, Domaine Alex Moreau
Domaine Alex Moreau
Alex Moreau is part of the Moreau family of Chassagne Montrachet, having worked alongside his father Bernard Moreau before establishing his own label and style. Based in the heart of the village, he draws on deep rooted family holdings across some of Chassagne’s most respected sites, with a focus on precise, site driven Chardonnay. Farming is carried out with a strong emphasis on sustainability and vineyard health, and in the cellar his approach is measured and exacting, favouring gentle pressing, controlled fermentations and élevage designed to balance richness with tension. While best known for white wines, his work with Pinot Noir follows the same philosophy of restraint, clarity and site transparency, aiming to capture finesse over extraction.
In Clos des Chenes, the character of the vineyard is immediately defined by its elevation and exposed position, where thin limestone soils limit vigour and concentrate the fruit into a more focused, tightly wound profile. Rather than the open, flowing style often associated with Volnay, this site delivers a wine built on structure and direction, where tension runs through the core from start to finish. Moreau leans into this naturally, avoiding any excess extraction and allowing the fruit to develop with clarity and restraint. The result is a profile centred on precise red fruits, fine floral lift and a distinctly stony undertone, with tannins that are present but finely detailed, guiding the wine toward a long, composed and mineral driven finish.
