Bodega Comando G is made up of Fernando García, Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi and Marc Isart. They met in 2005 while at university where they forged their friendship based on a mutual passion: making first-rate Garnacha wines, which capture and express the terroir of the unique plots where the grapes are grown. Three years later, in 2008, they launched the Comando G (G for Garnacha) business venture. Although there are some who affectionately call them the ‘enochalados’ (‘crazy oenologists’), in reality, this ‘online cooperative bodega’ (as described by El Mundo Vino) is carrying out the very serious task of searching for old-vine vineyards planted with the Garnacha grape variety in the Sierra de Gredos, between the provinces of Madrid and Ávila.

Villanueva Tinto is a village level Garnacha from the higher altitude vineyards around Villanueva de Ávila in the Sierra de Gredos, where granite dominated soils, quartz rich fragments and sandy decomposed rock define a stark, mineral driven terroir. The vineyards sit at some of the cooler elevations within the Comando G range, typically above 1,000 metres, where extreme diurnal shifts and poor soils naturally limit vigour and yield. The vines are old bush trained Garnacha, deeply rooted in fractured granite, producing small berries with intense aromatic concentration and finely etched tannins. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and a significant proportion of whole clusters, contributing lift, spice and structural definition. Ageing takes place in large oak foudres and concrete, preserving the wine’s precision and linearity rather than adding overt oak influence. The wine shows a more vertical and restrained profile than Rozas, with red cherry, wild strawberry and cranberry layered with mountain herbs, white pepper and crushed stone. The palate is taut and finely structured, with bright acidity, finely grained tannins and a long, mineral finish that reflects the altitude and austere granite soils of Villanueva de Ávila.
