Ciro Picariello is based in Summonte, a high altitude village in the Irpinia hills of Campania, where he founded his estate in 2004. His vineyards sit between 500 and 700 metres above sea level on limestone and clay soils, among the coolest and most elevated in the region. Farming is organic in practice, entirely manual, and focused on low yields and late harvesting to retain acidity and site definition. Picariello’s reputation has been built on precision and restraint, with cellar work kept deliberately simple to preserve natural tension and varietal clarity.
Taurasi O Pilota 2020 is made from Aglianico grown in selected Irpinia parcels suited to long ageing. The 2020 vintage delivered ripe fruit with firm structure and freshness. Fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts, followed by extended ageing in large neutral oak to soften tannins while preserving the grape’s natural intensity. The wine is structured and serious, showing dark cherry, black plum, dried herbs and smoky mineral notes, with firm tannins and a long, savoury finish built for ageing.
