Ivan Massonnat of Domaine Belargus is redefining Anjou’s place on the Loire Valley fine wine map with his exceptional, terroir-driven Chenin Blancs.
Located on the Coteau des Treilles slopes in Anjou Noir, Belargus builds on the legacy of winemaking pioneer Jo Pithon, who restored fragmented vineyard plots and championed dry Chenin Blanc production. Since acquiring the domaine in 2018, Massonnat has expanded it to include parcels in Savennières and the prestigious Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru, the Loire Valley’s only Grand Cru.
With winemaker Adrien Moreau, Belargus crafts vibrant, single-plot cuvées and rare botrytised sweet wines, combining approachability in youth with significant aging potential. Already critically acclaimed, including a 100-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, these wines are poised to become future cult classics.
