Domaine Belargus was created by Ivan Massonnat to revive and celebrate the historic crus of Anjou Noir, assembling an extraordinary collection of monopoles and terroirs once prized by the region’s greatest growers. The domaine centres on Chenin grown in the schist, quartz and volcanic soils that shape the hillsides of Savennières, Quarts de Chaume and the Layon valley. The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, with meticulous canopy management, low yields and detailed parcel by parcel harvesting. Vinifications rely on indigenous yeasts, gentle pressing and patient ageing in large neutral vessels to reveal precision, tension and the layered mineral expression that Chenin achieves on these ancient slopes.
Savennieres Gaudrets 2021 comes from a selection of parcels across the plateau of Savennieres where schist and volcanic elements shape wines of clarity and drive. The cool vintage placed emphasis on acidity and aromatic precision, leading to a restrained and finely etched style. Grapes were harvested by hand, sorted carefully and pressed slowly before native yeast fermentation. Ageing in large older barrels preserved the wine’s mineral line while adding subtle lees derived complexity. The result is taut and pure with citrus, apple skin, fennel, smoke and a long stony finish.
