Tenuta Baroni Campanino was established in 2006 on the slopes of Monte Subasio, within a protected natural park above Assisi. The estate is overseen by oenologist Michele Lorenzetti, a committed biodynamic practitioner who works with the surrounding landscape rather than imposing too much upon it. Vineyards sit between 600 and 900 metres, surrounded by woodland and pasture, where cooler mountain conditions help preserve freshness and acidity in the grapes. It is a distinctly different setting for Sangiovese, far removed from the warmer, more familiar expressions of Tuscany.

Sassi Rosa takes its name from the region’s distinctive pink Assisi stone. Made entirely from Sangiovese, the grapes are hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete, with around ten days of skin contact. Bottled without fining or filtration, it is an uncomplicated but characterful expression of the variety. Bright red cherry and darker fruit lead, followed by tomato leaf, dried herbs and earthy savouriness. Fresh acidity and well integrated tannins make for an energetic, food friendly red.
