Domaine Claude Riffault is based in Sury en Vaux, in the heart of Sancerre, where the family has farmed vines since the early twentieth century. Claude Riffault took over the estate in 1985, expanding and refining it before passing day to day responsibility to his son Etienne in the early 2000s. The domaine now farms around thirteen hectares biodynamically, certified since 2011, with vineyards spread across the appellation’s key soil types including caillottes, terres blanches and silex. Work in the vineyard is meticulous and entirely manual, with low yields, careful canopy management and harvesting at full phenolic ripeness. In the cellar, the approach is precise and transparent, using indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction and restrained élevage to express site rather than technique.
Les Chailloux 2023 is sourced from vines aged around forty to fifty years planted on flint dominated soils at 240 metres altitude. In this vintage the fruit achieved full ripeness while maintaining freshness and tensile energy. Grapes were hand harvested, pressed gently, then fermented with native yeasts in concrete and neutral oak vessels. The wine was aged on fine lees for approximately fourteen months, with minimal intervention, building texture and complexity while retaining saline clarity and limestone driven freshness.
