Domaine Claude Riffault is based in Sury en Vaux, in the heart of Sancerre, where the family has farmed vines since the early twentieth century. Claude Riffault took over the estate in 1985, expanding and refining it before passing day to day responsibility to his son Etienne in the early 2000s. The domaine now farms around thirteen hectares biodynamically, certified since 2011, with vineyards spread across the appellation’s key soil types including caillottes, terres blanches and silex. Work in the vineyard is meticulous and entirely manual, with low yields, careful canopy management and harvesting at full phenolic ripeness. In the cellar, the approach is precise and transparent, using indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction and restrained élevage to express site rather than technique.
La Noue Rouge 2023 comes from Pinot Noir grown on limestone rich soils near Sury en Vaux, favouring finesse and aromatic clarity. The 2023 vintage was relatively balanced, producing ripe fruit with good natural acidity. Fermentation was carried out gently to limit extraction, followed by ageing that preserves freshness and purity. The wine is supple and finely etched, showing red cherry, cranberry and subtle earthy notes, with soft tannins and a clean, mineral finish.
