Rumbo Al Norte, Comando G 2022
Comando G
Bodega Comando G is made up of Fernando García, Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi and Marc Isart. They met in 2005 while at university where they forged their friendship based on a mutual passion: making first-rate Garnacha wines, which capture and express the terroir of the unique plots where the grapes are grown. Three years later, in 2008, they launched the Comando G (G for Garnacha) business venture. Although there are some who affectionately call them the ‘enochalados’ (‘crazy oenologists’), in reality, this ‘online cooperative bodega’ (as described by El Mundo Vino) is carrying out the very serious task of searching for old-vine vineyards planted with the Garnacha grape variety in the Sierra de Gredos, between the provinces of Madrid and Ávila.
Rumbo Al Norte is one of Comando G’s most distinctive single vineyard Garnacha cuvées, sourced from a very small, high altitude parcel in the northernmost, coolest fringes of the Sierra de Gredos. The vineyard sits at extreme elevation on decomposed granite and quartz rich soils, where exposure to cold winds and a pronounced continental climate create exceptionally slow ripening conditions and naturally very low yields. The site name reflects its orientation and marginal position, where vines are pushed to their limits and produce fruit of striking aromatic precision and tension. The vines are old bush trained Garnacha, farmed entirely by hand on steep, fragmented slopes, with an emphasis on preserving balance rather than chasing ripeness. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and a significant proportion of whole clusters, enhancing perfume, spice and structural clarity. Ageing takes place in large oak foudres and concrete vats, ensuring purity and a transparent expression of site. The wine is cool and highly detailed, showing redcurrant, wild strawberry and cranberry layered with rose petals, mountain herbs, white pepper and crushed granite. The palate is finely coiled and linear, with delicate but persistent tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, saline mineral finish that captures the extreme, northerly exposure of this singular vineyard.
