Cerbaiona is one of the most revered estates in Montalcino, founded in 1977 by Diego Molinari and elevated to international renown during the nineteen eighties and nineties for its uncompromising, site driven Brunello. The domaine sits on the northern slopes of Montalcino near Canalicchio, at around 300 metres altitude, where galestro and limestone soils combine with cooler exposures to give Sangiovese of precision and longevity. Today the estate is owned by Matthew Fioretti, who has preserved Cerbaiona’s original philosophy of extremely low yields, meticulous hand work and classical vinification. Vineyards are farmed organically, harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, and the cellar approach remains resolutely traditional, with long fermentations, extended macerations and ageing in large Slavonian oak to prioritise structure, balance and age worthy finesse.

Cerbaiona Rosso di Montalcino 2022 comes from the same northern hillside vineyards as the Brunello, with fruit selected for earlier drinking while maintaining the estate’s hallmark structure. The 2022 season was warm and dry, producing small berries and naturally concentrated musts, yet altitude and exposure helped retain freshness. Harvest was carried out by hand in early autumn, followed by spontaneous fermentation and a shorter maceration than for Brunello. Ageing took place in large Slavonian oak for a limited period to soften tannins while preserving energy. The wine is vibrant and expressive, offering ripe red fruits, subtle spice and a savoury mineral edge, with a firm but accessible finish.
