Strongly believing in respecting local grape varieties, Burja Estate winemaker Primož Lavrencic bought a 60 year old Malvasia vineyard in the Vipava Valley along the northern Adriatic coast some years ago. Today he produces Zelen, Pokalca (Schioppettino), Refošk (Refosco), Rebula (Ribolla Gialla), Malvazija (Malvasia d`Istria), Laški rizling (Italian Riesling, Welschriesling) and Modra frankinja (Blaufränkisch) wines, ensuring that the principals of organic and biodynamic production are followed. Lavrencic works with nature to encourage character and authenticity is his wines, always looking for spontaneous fermentation and diversity.
A distinctive Vipava Valley red blending 40% Schioppettino (Pokalca), 30% Refosco and 30% Blaufränkisch, three varieties with deep historical roots in the region. The fruit is destemmed and traditionally macerated before ageing in large old oak, allowing the character of the grapes to remain firmly at the forefront.
Dark cherry, blackberry and ripe plum meet violet, black pepper and Mediterranean herbs, with subtle earthy and smoky notes underneath. The palate is medium-bodied and wonderfully energetic, combining silky tannins with refreshing acidity and a savoury mineral edge. Deep and characterful yet never heavy, with a long, spicy and gently herbal finish.
