Bret Brothers is the négociant arm of Domaine La Soufrandière, led by brothers Jean Guillaume and Jean Philippe Bret, who are based in the Mâconnais and have become key figures in the region’s shift toward high quality, terroir driven Chardonnay. Alongside their estate holdings, the Bret Brothers project allows them to work with trusted growers across southern Burgundy, applying the same organic and biodynamic principles and meticulous vineyard selection. Their approach centres on low intervention winemaking, native fermentations and careful élevage, with a focus on expressing site with clarity, energy and precision rather than weight or overt oak influence.
En Chantenay is a Pouilly Fuissé climat known for its limestone rich soils and relatively elevated position, giving wines that combine ripeness with freshness and a distinctly mineral profile. The Cuvée Zen designation reflects a particularly restrained, low intervention approach, often bottled with minimal sulphur to preserve the wine’s natural expression. The vineyard yields Chardonnay with both aromatic generosity and underlying tension, which the Brets handle with a light touch to maintain balance and precision. The wine shows ripe citrus, yellow apple and pear, alongside white flowers, almond and a subtle hazelnut note from élevage. There is a clear chalky minerality running through the palate, giving structure and length, with a finish that is both textural and finely saline, reflecting the limestone driven character of the site.
