Bret Brothers is the négociant arm of Domaine La Soufrandière, led by brothers Jean Guillaume and Jean Philippe Bret, who are based in the Mâconnais and have become key figures in the region’s shift toward high quality, terroir driven Chardonnay. Alongside their estate holdings, the Bret Brothers project allows them to work with trusted growers across southern Burgundy, applying the same organic and biodynamic principles and meticulous vineyard selection. Their approach centres on low intervention winemaking, native fermentations and careful élevage, with a focus on expressing site with clarity, energy and precision rather than weight or overt oak influence.

En Carementrant sits on the limestone and marl slopes of Vergisson, where steep gradients, shallow soils and high stone content naturally limit vigour and concentrate expression into a more linear, structured style of Chardonnay. The site is known for producing wines with a strong mineral backbone, marked tension and a precise, almost chiselled fruit profile rather than broad Mâconnais richness. In the Cuvée Zen interpretation, the Brets aim to preserve this natural precision with minimal intervention, allowing fermentation to proceed slowly in barrel and favouring a restrained élevage that respects the site’s inherent energy. The wine shows citrus oil, green apple and white peach, with white floral lift, crushed stone and a distinctly saline, limestone driven edge. The palate is taut and focused, driven by acidity and mineral grip, finishing long and precise with a clear sense of altitude and rock derived tension.
