Massa Vecchia is a pioneering natural wine estate in Tuscany’s Alta Maremma, founded in 1985 by Fabrizio Niccolaini. From the outset, the estate rejected industrial practices in favor of organic farming, later adopting full biodynamics by 2004. Located on limestone soils near Massa Marittima, the six hectare estate, now run by Fabrizio’s daughter Francesca Sarti, focuses on indigenous varieties like Sangiovese, Trebbiano, and Aleatico. All wines are made with native yeasts, extended maceration, no filtration, and minimal or no sulfur. With a strong sense of place and a minimalist approach, Massa Vecchia remains one of Italy’s most respected voices in natural winemaking.

Poggio a Venti is a single-vineyard Sangiovese from a southeast-facing parcel of limestone and galestro, planted at 320 meters. In 2021, fruit was manually harvested, destemmed, and fermented with native yeasts. Maceration lasted 40 days in open vats, followed by 24 months of aging in used tonneaux. Bottled without fining or filtration and with no added sulfur, this is Massa Vecchia’s most structured red, dense, mineral, and vertical, with savory black cherry, forest floor, and a long, stony finish.
