Les Cailloux du Paradis is an iconic estate in the Sologne viticole, located near Soings en Sologne in the Loir et Cher. The domaine was founded in the late 1970s by Claude Courtois, a pioneer of natural winemaking in France whose work predates the modern natural wine movement. Today the estate is run by his son, Étienne Courtois, who continues the family’s uncompromising approach to low intervention viticulture across roughly ten hectares of mixed sand, flint, clay, and silex soils. The vineyards are farmed organically with biodynamic influences, worked entirely by hand, and surrounded by forest which encourages biodiversity. Fermentations are spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, ageing is slow and oxidative in old barrels, and no sulphur is added at any stage, producing wines of deep character and unmistakable identity.

A rare library release from Claude Courtois’ Les Cailloux du Paradis, one of the pioneering domaines of natural wine in the Loire. Made from 100% Pinot Noir grown on the domaine’s organically farmed vineyards in Sologne, the 2016 has now had almost a decade to develop in bottle.

The bright red fruit of its youth has evolved towards dried cherry and wild strawberry, layered with forest floor, dried flowers, gentle spice and earthy, savoury notes. Delicate and wonderfully expressive on the palate, with fine tannins, fresh acidity and a persistent mineral character. A beautifully mature, increasingly difficult-to-find bottle offering a rare glimpse into the ageworthiness of Claude Courtois’ singular wines.
