Steve Matthiasson is a Napa Valley grower and winemaker widely regarded for his vineyard first approach and for helping redefine what restraint looks like in a region traditionally associated with ripeness and extraction. Alongside his wife Jill Matthiasson, he works with a range of organic and dry farmed vineyards across Napa and Sonoma, focusing on balance, moderate alcohol levels and transparency of site rather than density or oak influence. His work spans both consulting and estate fruit, and he is closely associated with a more European inspired interpretation of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and blends, with an emphasis on freshness, natural acidity and controlled ripening.
Phoenix Vineyard is a Cabernet Sauvignon site in Napa Valley known for producing fruit with structure, aromatic lift and a cooler profile compared to many valley floor sites. The vineyard benefits from a combination of well drained soils and moderating climatic influences, which help retain acidity and prevent excessive sugar accumulation during the growing season. In the 2021 vintage, which was generally low yielding and marked by concentration and freshness in Napa, the fruit achieved a balance of ripe dark fruit character and fine structural definition. The wine shows blackcurrant, cassis and dark cherry, with cedar, violet and subtle herbal notes. The palate is focused and moderately structured, with fine tannins and a long, precise finish that reflects both site expression and Matthiasson’s restrained winemaking philosophy.
