Moulin-à-Vent Champs de Cour, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Thibault Liger-Belair took over the family domaine in 2001, re-establishing a historic Nuits-Saint-Georges estate whose roots trace back several generations within one of Burgundy’s most recognised families. While distinct from the Vosne-Romanée branch of the Liger-Belair lineage, Thibault has built his domaine with a clear, independent identity, steadily expanding holdings through both inheritance and carefully selected parcels. Today the estate spans key sites across the Côte de Nuits and Beaujolais, reflecting his dual focus on Pinot Noir and Gamay, and his interest in expressing site across different terroirs. He farms organically, with biodynamic principles increasingly informing vineyard work, and places strong emphasis on vine health, soil vitality, and precise harvest timing. In the cellar, his approach is deliberate and restrained, often incorporating whole bunch fermentation, favouring gentle extraction, and adapting élevage to each cuvée to balance structure with clarity of fruit and terroir expression.
Champs de Cour is a Moulin à Vent parcel rooted in decomposed granite and manganese rich soils that are typical of the cru and give Gamay both power and aromatic depth. The site is known for producing structured, age worthy wines within Beaujolais, and Liger Belair approaches it with a Burgundian level of precision, emphasising low yields, careful sorting and a significant proportion of whole bunch fermentation. Extraction is gentle but extended to build depth and frame without losing freshness, and élevage takes place in a combination of neutral barrels and larger format vessels to preserve purity. The wine shows concentrated black cherry, redcurrant and wild blackberry, layered with violet, crushed stone, spice and a distinctive mineral tension from the granite soils. The palate is structured yet vibrant, with firm but fine tannins and a long, savoury finish that reflects both the power and finesse of top Moulin à Vent terroir.
