Sylvain Pataille is one of Burgundy’s most thoughtful and meticulous vignerons, quietly redefining what’s possible in Marsannay. Trained as an oenologist in Bordeaux, he began consulting for others before starting his own domaine in 1999 with just one hectare. Today, he farms over 15 hectares biodynamically, focusing on low yields, native yeast fermentations, and minimal intervention in the cellar. Sylvain is deeply committed to the expressive potential of Pinot Noir and Aligoté, working with old vines and historic lieux-dits. His wines are precise, textural, and soulful, anchored in limestone and crafted with the humility and rigor of a true artisan.

Clos du Roy is one of the historic heartlands of Marsannay, with clay and limestone soils that deliver both structure and depth. In 2021, a cooler growing season and reduced yields resulted in a wine of fine tension and aromatic detail. Fruit is hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, often incorporating a thoughtful proportion of whole bunch to build frame and lift. Ageing in French oak barrels with restrained new wood ensures the emphasis remains on site expression. The wine shows red cherry, crushed raspberry and subtle spice, underpinned by firm yet refined tannins and a persistent mineral finish.
