Clos du Jaugueyron was founded by Michel Théron, originally from Minervois, who settled in Bordeaux after meeting his wife, Stéphanie. Captivated by the Médoc, Michel acquired his first vineyard in Cantenac in 1993, a historic plot later leased to friends at Closeries des Moussis.
With perseverance and minimal financial resources, Michel and Stéphanie expanded their holdings through long-term leases, eventually reaching 7ha across Haut-Médoc and Margaux. Their commitment to biodiversity led them to reclaim 2ha of abandoned land near the Landes forest, planting high-density vines despite the mildew risks. Today, Clos du Jaugueyron consists of 16 parcels scattered between forest, ocean, and estuary. Certified Demeter since 2008, Michel tailors his farming to each microclimate, working closely with nature.
The winery, modest by regional standards, sits beside their home in the Landes. Fermentations occur in cement tanks with 20-50% whole bunches, and extraction is minimal to preserve purity. The wines undergo élevage in old barrels and concrete tanks without racking or topping up, allowing very low sulphur use. Always refining their methods, they embrace innovation, such as their unique ‘pied de cuve’ approach to fermentation. Michel and Stéphanie are pioneers, inspiring a new wave of Bordeaux vignerons. Their work proves that Bordeaux’s terroir can still be expressed with authenticity and soul.
Nout (Egyptian goddess of water and fertility) comes from 25yo vines planted in a gravel-clay soil in the lieu-dit of Tertre. Yields are a low 29hh, and the wine was aged for a year in 50% new oak and 50% 1yo barrels. We love this cuvée with its higher proportion of merlot making it relatively open in its youth, it has the purity, clarity of fruit and elegance that you come to expect from Jaugueyron, with a mineral fleck of salinity on the finish. For drinking now to 2030.
