Mareneve, Federico Graziani 2018
Federico Graziani
Federico Graziani is a winemaker and former sommelier who built his reputation by marrying deep wine knowledge with bold experimentation. Originally earning recognition as “Best Sommelier Italy” in 1998 and later gaining academic credentials in viticulture and oenology (2006), he turned his attention to Etna, where he farms vineyards on the northern slopes, in zones like Passopisciaro and Montelaguardia, cultivating Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio (for reds), and blends of local and non-local white varieties in high altitude contrade. His viticulture is traditional and respectful: alberello training, hand harvest, minimal intervention, indigenous yeasts, avoidance of systemic pesticides, and long ageing on lees or in neutral or steel vessels.
Mareneve 2018 is a high-altitude white blend planted in Contrada Nave, near Bronte, around 1,200 metres above sea level. The vineyard is trained alberello, containing a blend of Carricante, Grecanico, Riesling Renano (German Riesling), Gewürztraminer, and Chenin Blanc. The harvest takes place between late September and early October. Vinification is with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel; no malolactic fermentation is carried out, to preserve acidity. The wine ages on fine lees in steel for 18 months, then spends 6 months in bottle before release. On the nose it exhibits exotic fruit (tropical notes, white peach, lychee), floral touches, herbal and mineral notes, citrus and stone/petrichor, with saline and volcanic minerality. On the palate it is vertical, fresh, aromatic, refined, with persistent salinity and a clean finish.
