Bret Brothers is the négociant arm of Domaine La Soufrandière, led by brothers Jean Guillaume and Jean Philippe Bret, who are based in the Mâconnais and have become key figures in the region’s shift toward high quality, terroir driven Chardonnay. Alongside their estate holdings, the Bret Brothers project allows them to work with trusted growers across southern Burgundy, applying the same organic and biodynamic principles and meticulous vineyard selection. Their approach centres on low intervention winemaking, native fermentations and careful élevage, with a focus on expressing site with clarity, energy and precision rather than weight or overt oak influence.
Vernayes is a site in the commune of Igé in the northern Mâconnais, where limestone and clay soils combine with gentle slopes to produce Chardonnay that sits between freshness and ripe, rounded fruit. The vineyard typically yields wines with good mid palate texture while retaining a clear mineral backbone, reflecting its position between cooler and warmer influences within the region. The Brets approach this cuvée with restraint, focusing on purity of fruit and site expression rather than overt winemaking influence. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, followed by a measured élevage in barrel that adds subtle breadth without obscuring definition. The wine shows ripe citrus, yellow apple and pear, with white flowers, subtle almond and a fine chalky, saline edge. The palate is supple and gently structured, with a balanced, mineral driven finish that reflects both site character and the region’s natural generosity.
