Macon Cuvée Terroirs du Mâconnais, Bret Brothers
Bret Brothers
Bret Brothers is the négociant arm of Domaine La Soufrandière, led by brothers Jean Guillaume and Jean Philippe Bret, who are based in the Mâconnais and have become key figures in the region’s shift toward high quality, terroir driven Chardonnay. Alongside their estate holdings, the Bret Brothers project allows them to work with trusted growers across southern Burgundy, applying the same organic and biodynamic principles and meticulous vineyard selection. Their approach centres on low intervention winemaking, native fermentations and careful élevage, with a focus on expressing site with clarity, energy and precision rather than weight or overt oak influence.
Cuvée Terroirs du Mâconnais is built from selected parcels and individual fermentations drawn across several villages in the Mâconnais, rather than a fixed vineyard blend. It represents a practical selection of high quality fruit that varies with vintage conditions, bringing together different expressions of limestone and clay dominated soils across the region. The emphasis is on balance and drinkability rather than a single site identity, showing a snapshot of the appellation’s breadth through careful blending decisions made after fermentation. Vinification is kept deliberately flexible, with some parcels fermented and aged in tank to preserve fruit purity, while others see élevage in used oak to build texture and integration. The resulting wine shows ripe citrus, yellow apple and pear, with white floral notes, subtle almond and a gentle saline edge. The palate is open and supple, with a clean, lightly structured finish that prioritises freshness and immediate appeal over architectural complexity.
