Bret Brothers is the négociant arm of Domaine La Soufrandière, led by brothers Jean Guillaume and Jean Philippe Bret, who are based in the Mâconnais and have become key figures in the region’s shift toward high quality, terroir driven Chardonnay. Alongside their estate holdings, the Bret Brothers project allows them to work with trusted growers across southern Burgundy, applying the same organic and biodynamic principles and meticulous vineyard selection. Their approach centres on low intervention winemaking, native fermentations and careful élevage, with a focus on expressing site with clarity, energy and precision rather than weight or overt oak influence.
Les Crays is a Mâcon Chardonnay from limestone and marl soils that give both ripeness and a clear mineral frame. The site typically produces fruit with generous orchard character but also a firm structural line, particularly when grown on the higher quality parcels selected by the Brets. The aim in this cuvée is to preserve freshness and site definition rather than accentuate weight, with a focus on clarity of fruit and texture. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, followed by a restrained élevage in barrel that adds subtle breadth without dominating the wine’s natural expression. The wine shows ripe lemon, yellow apple and pear, with white flowers, almond and a faint flinty edge. The palate is supple and open, balanced by a clean, mineral driven finish that keeps the wine focused and energetic.
