Linda Vista Chardonnay, Matthiasson 2023
Matthiasson
Steve Matthiasson is a Napa Valley grower and winemaker known for a restrained, vineyard first philosophy that deliberately contrasts with the region’s more powerful and oak driven mainstream style. Alongside Jill Matthiasson, he farms and sources from a network of certified organic and dry farmed vineyards across Napa and Sonoma, with a consistent focus on balance, moderate alcohol and natural acidity. His Chardonnay work is particularly influential in California, prioritising early picking, slow native fermentations and neutral élevage to preserve freshness, precision and site transparency rather than richness or overt malolactic weight.
Linda Vista Chardonnay comes from a vineyard located in the western part of the Oak Knoll District close to the Matthiasson winery, originally planted in 1989 by Beringer, with mature vines that contribute notable concentration and depth. The site sits on clay rich soils with cover cropping that helps retain moisture in a notably dry growing environment, conditions further intensified in low yielding vintages that naturally increase concentration in the fruit. Harvest is carried out in multiple passes, with earlier picks contributing acidity and later picks adding mid palate weight and flesh, allowing for a balanced structural profile. Vinification is deliberately simple, with whole cluster pressing followed by native fermentation in neutral barrels, extended lees ageing without racking and minimal stirring. Around two fifths of the barrels are allowed to complete malolactic conversion to soften acidity, while the remainder are protected to retain fresher malic drive, resulting in a Chardonnay that balances texture with tension and finishes with clarity and precision.
