Las Rozas 1er Cru, Comando G
Comando G
Bodega Comando G is made up of Fernando García, Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi and Marc Isart. They met in 2005 while at university where they forged their friendship based on a mutual passion: making first-rate Garnacha wines, which capture and express the terroir of the unique plots where the grapes are grown. Three years later, in 2008, they launched the Comando G (G for Garnacha) business venture. Although there are some who affectionately call them the ‘enochalados’ (‘crazy oenologists’), in reality, this ‘online cooperative bodega’ (as described by El Mundo Vino) is carrying out the very serious task of searching for old-vine vineyards planted with the Garnacha grape variety in the Sierra de Gredos, between the provinces of Madrid and Ávila.
Las Rozas 1er Cru is drawn from a selection of Comando G's finest old vine Garnacha parcels around Rozas de Puerto Real, sourced from higher altitude sites planted on decomposed granite and quartz soils between 850 and 950 metres above sea level. Conceived as the next step above La Bruja de Rozas in the estate's village hierarchy, the wine is produced from a far more selective group of vineyards chosen for their ability to deliver greater depth, mineral definition and ageing potential. Many of these bush vines are between sixty and eighty years old, producing naturally low yields and fruit of exceptional concentration. The cooler mountain climate and poor granitic soils create a wine of remarkable tension and precision, while the age of the vines contributes an added layer of complexity and structure. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and a significant proportion of whole clusters, followed by élevage in large oak foudres that preserve transparency and site expression. Compared with the more immediate and expressive character of La Bruja de Rozas, this cuvée is more focused and layered, with
a fragrant nose with notes of cherry, blood orange, delicate floral fragrances, thyme and a hint of rose petals. The palate has beautiful sweet and sour cherry flavours with cranberry, pomegranate, stony and herbaceous notes. The wine also has immense salinity and razor-sharp precision.
