Bret Brothers is the négociant arm of Domaine La Soufrandière, led by brothers Jean Guillaume and Jean Philippe Bret, who are based in the Mâconnais and have become key figures in the region’s shift toward high quality, terroir driven Chardonnay. Alongside their estate holdings, the Bret Brothers project allows them to work with trusted growers across southern Burgundy, applying the same organic and biodynamic principles and meticulous vineyard selection. Their approach centres on low intervention winemaking, native fermentations and careful élevage, with a focus on expressing site with clarity, energy and precision rather than weight or overt oak influence.

La Carbonnode is a Pouilly Vinzelles climat within the Mâconnais, where clay limestone soils and gentle slopes produce Chardonnay with a naturally generous fruit profile balanced by a clear mineral backbone. The site typically delivers more texture and mid palate depth than the most linear Mâconnais parcels, while still retaining freshness through its limestone influence. In the Cuvée Zen interpretation from La Soufrandière, the emphasis is on purity and restraint, with minimal intervention to preserve the vineyard’s natural expression. Fermentation is allowed to proceed spontaneously, followed by élevage designed to maintain tension and clarity without overt oak influence. The wine shows ripe citrus, yellow apple and pear, with white floral notes, subtle almond and a fine saline, chalk driven finish. The palate is rounded yet precise, with a gentle tension that carries through to a clean, focused finish.
