Les Chaumes des Lies is the project of Margaux Rivaux and Lothar Galloo, working parcels in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune at elevations of roughly 350 to 400 metres. This higher plateau above the Côte is defined by limestone rich soils with active chalk and shallow clay, producing wines of natural tension and aromatic clarity. Still early in its life, with only a handful of vintages released, the domaine has a clearly articulated philosophy: organic vineyard work, careful canopy management, modest yields and a refusal to rely on new oak. Elevage takes place exclusively in older barrels, allowing soil, altitude and vintage to shape the wine rather than cellar artefact. The aim is precision and energy, not extraction or weight.

The 2023 vintage brought warmth across Burgundy, yet at this elevation the growing season retained freshness and acidity. Harvest timing was focused on preserving balance, picking at moderate sugars to maintain lift. The wine opens with bright red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry, layered with subtle rose petal and a faint savoury nuance. On the palate it is supple but defined, with fine grained tannins and a clear limestone driven line that carries through the finish. There is an interplay between juicy fruit and mineral restraint, giving both immediacy and structure. It is a transparent, finely etched expression of high altitude Pinot Noir, built more on tension and clarity than power.
