Gevrey-Chambertin La Croix des Champs, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Thibault Liger-Belair took over the family domaine in 2001, re-establishing a historic Nuits-Saint-Georges estate whose roots trace back several generations within one of Burgundy’s most recognised families. While distinct from the Vosne-Romanée branch of the Liger-Belair lineage, Thibault has built his domaine with a clear, independent identity, steadily expanding holdings through both inheritance and carefully selected parcels. Today the estate spans key sites across the Côte de Nuits and Beaujolais, reflecting his dual focus on Pinot Noir and Gamay, and his interest in expressing site across different terroirs. He farms organically, with biodynamic principles increasingly informing vineyard work, and places strong emphasis on vine health, soil vitality, and precise harvest timing. In the cellar, his approach is deliberate and restrained, often incorporating whole bunch fermentation, favouring gentle extraction, and adapting élevage to each cuvée to balance structure with clarity of fruit and terroir expression.
La Croix des Champs is a Gevrey Chambertin village parcel that sits on limestone rich soils with a mix of clay influence, giving a balance of aromatic lift and underlying structure. Liger Belair approaches the site with a restrained hand, using partial whole bunch fermentation to enhance aromatic complexity while maintaining precision in extraction. Elevage in barrel is carefully calibrated with moderate new oak to support structure without overshadowing the fruit. The wine shows a core of dark cherry, blackberry and red plum, layered with spice, crushed stone and subtle herbal tones. The palate is both structured and energetic, with fine tannins and a persistent, mineral driven finish that reflects the tension and detail of Gevrey in a lighter, more lifted register.
