Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet 2023
Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet
Domaine Berthaut Gerbet is a family estate based in Fixin in the northern Côte de Nuits, led by Amélie Berthaut following the merger of two historic family domaines, Berthaut and Gerbet, a consolidation that brought together some of the village’s more significant vineyard holdings. Long established in Fixin, the family has played a key role in reshaping the appellation’s reputation, moving it away from its traditionally robust, negociant dominated profile toward wines defined by greater precision and clarity of fruit. Amélie, who took full control of winemaking in the late 2010s, is closely associated with this stylistic evolution, introducing more controlled extraction and a clearer focus on transparency across the range. While rooted in Fixin, the domaine also works with parcels in Gevrey Chambertin and Vosne Romanée, giving it access to a broader spectrum of Côte de Nuits terroirs. Viticulture is increasingly guided by organic principles, with careful canopy management, low yields and precise picking decisions aimed at preserving aromatic detail and structural balance.
The Gevrey Chambertin is sourced from a selection of village level parcels across the appellation, where limestone and clay soils of varying depth give Pinot Noir a naturally deeper and more structured profile than in Fixin. Gevrey typically brings greater density, darker fruit character and a firmer tannic frame within the Côte de Nuits, and this cuvée reflects that inherent weight while retaining the domaine’s focus on clarity and restraint. The wine shows black cherry, blackberry and ripe raspberry, with violet floral lift, subtle spice and a faint earthy undertone. The palate is more concentrated and layered than the Fixin wines, with a firmer structure and a longer, more sustained finish shaped by fine tannins and steady acidity. Winemaking follows a gentle extraction approach with fermentation in open top vats, partial whole cluster inclusion depending on vintage and parcel, and élevage in French oak barrels with a measured use of new oak to support structure without dominating the fruit.
