Pol Opuesto is the project of Pol Andsnes, an American born winemaker who settled in Argentina in the mid 2010s. Calling himself a wine nomad, he seeks out forgotten vineyards and alternative methods of élevage to create wines that stand apart from conventional Argentine styles. He founded Pol Opuesto around 2013, working across high altitude regions such as Gualtallary in the Uco Valley, as well as parcels in La Rioja and other cooler sites. Sourcing fruit from growers farming organically or with very low inputs, he focuses on spontaneous fermentations, extended macerations, and élevage in neutral vessels such as concrete eggs or old barrels. His aim is always to highlight purity, freshness and texture, producing wines that challenge expectations of the region while remaining firmly rooted in their terroir.
El Otro Lado Torrontés 2021 comes from high altitude vineyards in La Rioja planted at 1500 metres on rocky, free draining soils. The grapes were hand harvested and whole bunch pressed before fermenting spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The must was left on skins for an extended maceration, giving the wine both aromatic lift and a fine, phenolic grip. Ageing took place for eight months on lees in concrete eggs, with no oak influence and only minimal sulphur added before bottling. The result is a Torrontés of jasmine, citrus zest and white peach framed by chalky freshness, taut acidity and a savoury, lingering finish.
