Walgate Wines is Ben Walgate’s focused pursuit of terroir-driven, low-intervention English wine. Working from his organically farmed Peasmarsh vineyard in East Sussex, his aim is to craft wines that express site, soil, and season with clarity and restraint. Fermentation takes place in amphora, qvevri, and neutral oak, with no additions and minimal handling. Drawing on biodynamic principles, Walgate seeks purity over polish—producing elegant, mineral wines that challenge and redefine expectations of English still and sparkling wine.
One of Ben Walgate’s most distinctive wines, Cuvée 909 is an unusual co-ferment of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Pinot Meunier from Sussex. Whole bunches, whole berries and juice are layered together in an 800L qvevri, macerated for just over a month, then pressed and aged in a Stockinger puncheon and barrique.
At just 10.5% ABV, it’s wonderfully light on its feet, with wild strawberry and red cherry alongside ginger, pepper, herbs and a subtle sappy edge. Fresh, detailed and incredibly energetic, with gentle tannins and bright acidity — a brilliantly unconventional English red with serious drinkability.
