Cotes de Nuits Les Leury Vigne de 1937, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Thibault Liger-Belair took over the family domaine in 2001, re-establishing a historic Nuits-Saint-Georges estate whose roots trace back several generations within one of Burgundy’s most recognised families. While distinct from the Vosne-Romanée branch of the Liger-Belair lineage, Thibault has built his domaine with a clear, independent identity, steadily expanding holdings through both inheritance and carefully selected parcels. Today the estate spans key sites across the Côte de Nuits and Beaujolais, reflecting his dual focus on Pinot Noir and Gamay, and his interest in expressing site across different terroirs. He farms organically, with biodynamic principles increasingly informing vineyard work, and places strong emphasis on vine health, soil vitality, and precise harvest timing. In the cellar, his approach is deliberate and restrained, often incorporating whole bunch fermentation, favouring gentle extraction, and adapting élevage to each cuvée to balance structure with clarity of fruit and terroir expression.
Les Leury is an old vine parcel planted in 1937 within the Côte de Nuits Villages zone, where deep rooting vines sit in a mix of limestone and clay rich soils that naturally moderate vigour and concentrate fruit expression. This is a site that delivers both density and finesse when handled with restraint, and Liger Belair leans into that duality with careful whole bunch inclusion and a slow, gentle extraction to preserve aromatic definition. Elevage is carried out in barrel with a controlled proportion of new oak, allowing the character of the old vines and the site’s mineral backbone to remain central. The wine shows a focused core of dark cherry, blackberry and wild raspberry, interwoven with violet, spice and a subtle earthy, almost graphite like undertone. The palate is concentrated yet lifted, with finely etched tannins and a long, linear finish shaped by both old vine depth and limestone tension.
