Clos du Rouge Gorge was founded in 2002 by Cyril Fhal after he left the Loire Valley in search of a landscape capable of delivering delicacy, depth and a quietly expressive form of southern French character. He found it in Latour de France in the upper Agly Valley, a remote and windswept corner of northern Roussillon marked by ancient bush vines rooted in schist, gneiss and granite. Fhal assembled a patchwork of old parcels perched on steep terraces between 250 and 350 metres where farming is entirely manual and carried out according to organic and biodynamic principles. His aim has always been to channel purity and tension rather than the muscularity often associated with the region, working with extremely low yielding vines, native plant cover, careful pruning and meticulous harvest selection. In the cellar he follows a Burgundian sensibility that favours indigenous yeasts, whole clusters when suitable, neutral vessels, long ageing and minimal sulphur to present each site as transparently as possible.

Cotes Catalanes Jeunes Vignes 2021 comes from younger plantings of Grenache and Carignan grown on schist dominant terraces surrounding Latour de France. The vintage opened with a cool, dry spring that limited vigour and naturally moderated yields, followed by a warm but even summer that ripened fruit steadily while retaining balanced acidity. Harvest was conducted by hand over several small passes, with each parcel picked at optimum freshness. Fermentation took place with native yeasts and a significant proportion of whole clusters, using a gentle infusion approach to keep tannins supple and aromatics high toned. Ageing occurred in older barrels and cement for roughly a year to encourage slow development without adding flavour from the vessels. The resulting wine is fragrant and energetic, shaped by red fruits, wild herbs, subtle stone and the unmistakable mineral line of Roussillon schist, finishing with clarity and lifted tension.
