Give Up The Ghost, Momento Mori 2019
New Zealander Dane Johns started his career in wine working for Bill Downie in Victoria, later moving on to start his own label with fruit sourced from just a few organic growers throughout the region. All of Dane’s wines are as hand-made as can be. Small ferments, wild yeast, no new oak, no mechanical pumps, no fining, no filtration and no additions.
The nose is very refined and complex with a dominating feel of an alpine forest with notes of pine resin, nettle, fresh cut herbs, uplifting florals and a lemon citrus that note that holds it all together. The palate is much of the same exhibiting great energy and harmonious balance with nothing out of place. An extremely structured wine that really becomes defined with some air. It has great acidity, freshness and salinity with super-fine chalky tannins to round it out.
