Bodegas Ponce is a leading voice in the renewed interpretation of the Manchuela region in central Spain, focusing on old bush vines, high altitude sites and a transparent, low intervention approach to winemaking. The estate is driven by the belief that Bobal, the region’s key indigenous variety, can produce wines of finesse and energy when farmed with restraint and precision. Viticulture is organic in practice, with a strong emphasis on old vines, dry farming, and harvesting decisions based on balance rather than alcohol potential. In the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous and extraction is gentle, aiming to preserve the lifted, red fruited character and natural acidity of the fruit.
Clos Lojen is the entry level expression of Bobal from the estate, sourced from old bush vine parcels across limestone and clay soils in Manchuela at relatively high elevation. The vineyards are dry farmed and hand harvested, with a focus on preserving freshness in a naturally warm climate. Fruit is fully destemmed and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and neutral vessels, with very gentle extraction to emphasise purity over structure. Elevage is short and reductive, designed to preserve primary fruit expression rather than build oak influence. The resulting wine is vibrant and immediately expressive, with crunchy red cherry and raspberry fruit, floral violet lift, subtle herbal tones and a fine, chalky texture with soft, approachable tannins and a fresh, saline finish.
