Ciro Rosso Classico Superiore, Cataldo Calabretta 2018
Cataldo Calabretta
Ciro’ (DOC) is the land of Gaglioppo grape and Cataldo Calabretta is the leader of a group of young winemakers working organically and with low intervention. This wine is from what Cataldo describes as his families most beautiful but challenging vineyard. The soil is poor and in summer the vine suffers drought, however, Cataldo believes it is this strain on the vine that lends concentration to the fruit.
Light brick red colour even in youth which is typical of this variety. It is ethereal on the nose, the fruit initially hidden but once given time to breath a range of flavours emerge including leather, liquorice and dried prunes. On the palate tannin is present and well integrated and though the wine comes from a hot climate the body is not too full. With natural high acidity this is an elegant wine further enhanced by the salinity which characterises wines from the Ionic coast.
