Hervé Villemade is a natural wine producer based in Cellettes in the Cheverny appellation of the Loire Valley. He took over the family estate in 1995 and began converting the vineyards to organic farming after being inspired by Beaujolais natural wines and developing a personal allergy to sulfur. The domaine farms its 22 hectares of vines organically, working with traditional varieties such as Gamay and Pinot Noir on soils of sand, flint and clay. Villemade’s approach in the vineyard and cellar is rooted in minimal intervention, native yeast fermentations and low added sulfur at bottling, producing wines that are honest, refreshing and expressive of their terroir.
Cheverny Rouge 2023 is a red wine composed of Gamay and Pinot Noir from organically farmed vines. The grapes are hand harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and see a period of maceration before ageing in older vessels until bottling without fining or filtration. This wine shows aromas of red and dark fruit with subtle spice, a supple texture and lively freshness that make it approachable and food friendly, with both generosity of fruit and a sense of precision typical of the producer’s natural wine style.
