Cahors, Clos de Gamot 2020
Clos de Gamot
Jean’s family has been making wine at Gamot since 1610. In 1880 the phylloxera epidemic which will destroyed most of the European grapes hit the vineyards; Guillaume Jouffreau decided to collect the last vine shoots of Malbec from Clos de Gamot to try to graft them onto another vine branch. The Malbec on a Herbemont’s rootstock was a success and Guillaume Jouffreau saved the vineyard and also almost all the Cahors area. These days the Jouffreau family prefer to use friendly methods for our wine, avoiding all methods of “over” extraction or “extreme” concentration.
Planted on the river terraces on a mixture of gravel and flint soils this pale 100% Malbec is beautifully expressive of its terroir. Red cherries, leafy tea, wild herbs, pepper and liquorice, a garrigue-style Cahors with gentle Burgundian extraction.
