Steve Matthiasson is a Napa Valley grower and winemaker known for a restrained, vineyard led approach that runs counter to the region’s more powerful and oak driven mainstream style. Working alongside Jill Matthiasson, he farms and sources from a network of organically and dry farmed vineyards across Napa and Sonoma, with a strong focus on balance, moderate alcohol and natural acidity. His work has been influential in redefining what “Napa style” can look like for Bordeaux varieties, particularly Cabernet Franc, where he emphasises aromatic precision, freshness and herbal detail rather than extraction or density. The guiding philosophy across all wines is that site and season should remain visible in the glass, supported rather than masked by winemaking.

The Cabernet Franc is sourced from carefully selected Napa Valley vineyards that tend to sit in cooler or better ventilated sites, where Cabernet Franc can achieve full ripeness while retaining aromatic lift and structural finesse. The 2022 vintage in Napa followed a warm growing season but with careful vineyard management allowing for balanced phenolic development and maintained freshness in the resulting wines. In this cuvée, Cabernet Franc is presented in a pure, varietal focused expression, highlighting its natural aromatic complexity and fine tannic structure. The wine shows red and black cherry, raspberry and cassis, with violet florals, graphite and a subtle green herbal edge typical of well ripened Cabernet Franc. The palate is medium bodied, focused and finely textured, with fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish that emphasises clarity over weight.
