Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits La Roche, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair
Thibault Liger-Belair took over the family domaine in 2001, re-establishing a historic Nuits-Saint-Georges estate whose roots trace back several generations within one of Burgundy’s most recognised families. While distinct from the Vosne-Romanée branch of the Liger-Belair lineage, Thibault has built his domaine with a clear, independent identity, steadily expanding holdings through both inheritance and carefully selected parcels. Today the estate spans key sites across the Côte de Nuits and Beaujolais, reflecting his dual focus on Pinot Noir and Gamay, and his interest in expressing site across different terroirs. He farms organically, with biodynamic principles increasingly informing vineyard work, and places strong emphasis on vine health, soil vitality, and precise harvest timing. In the cellar, his approach is deliberate and restrained, often incorporating whole bunch fermentation, favouring gentle extraction, and adapting élevage to each cuvée to balance structure with clarity of fruit and terroir expression.
La Roche comes from the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, a higher altitude terroir above the Côte de Nuits escarpment where cooler conditions and limestone rich soils produce wines of natural freshness and tension. The parcel sits on well drained slopes with a strong stony component, encouraging aromatic lift and a more linear expression of Pinot Noir. Liger Belair approaches this cuvée with particular precision, using a proportion of whole bunch fermentation to enhance vibrancy and a gentle extraction to avoid excess weight. Elevage in barrel is kept relatively neutral with a limited proportion of new oak, prioritising purity and energy. The wine shows bright red cherry, cranberry and wild raspberry notes, layered with floral tones, subtle spice and a distinct chalky minerality. The palate is fine boned and energetic, with delicate tannins and a long, saline driven finish that highlights the altitude and limestone influence of the site.
