Sylvain Pataille is one of the most intellectually rigorous and quietly influential vignerons working in Burgundy today. Based in Marsannay, he established his domaine in 1999 and has since become a leading voice in low intervention viticulture across the Côte de Nuits. Farming is certified organic and increasingly shaped by biodynamic principles, with a strong emphasis on soil health, massal selections and the preservation of Burgundy’s overlooked varieties. His work with Aligoté has been particularly significant, championing old vines and site specific bottlings that elevate the grape far beyond its historical reputation.
Petit Puits comes from a distinct parcel of old Aligoté vines rooted in limestone dominant soils around Marsannay. The 2022 vintage delivered generous fruit with natural tension retained through careful harvest timing. Hand harvested fruit is whole bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing in older oak barrels to build texture without overt wood influence. The wine is precise and energetic, offering citrus zest, green apple and a saline mineral edge, with layered depth and a long, chalky finish.
