Celler Batlliu de Sort is a small, high altitude winery in Pallars Sobirà, in the Catalan Pyrenees, founded by four friends determined to revive viticulture in a region where vineyards had largely disappeared. Working in the mountainous terrain surrounding Sort, the team farms vineyards at around 850 metres above sea level, surrounded by forests and the peaks of the Pyrenees. Their approach centres on ecological viticulture, spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention, allowing the character of the mountain environment to come through in the wines. Pinot Noir is one of their principal varieties, thriving in the cooler conditions and calcareous soils, producing wines that favour freshness, delicacy and aromatic expression over weight and extraction.

Biu de Sort comes from the Finca Barreró vineyard, where Pinot Noir is grown in the high altitude conditions of the Pallars Sobirà. This is a particularly fresh and delicate expression of the variety, with fragrant cherry blossom, raspberry and a subtle hint of fennel. Fermented in stainless steel with regular pigeage during fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic conversion before spending 10 months ageing in stainless steel tanks. The reductive élevage preserves the wine's bright fruit and lively acidity, while the mountain climate lends an appealing freshness to the palate. Approachable and finely structured, this is a distinctly Pyrenean take on Pinot Noir, best enjoyed with a slight chill.
