Jean-Claude Rateau is a true pioneer of biodynamics in Burgundy, having converted his vineyards in Beaune as early as 1979—long before it was fashionable. Inspired by the writings of Rudolf Steiner and a deep respect for nature, Rateau has quietly cultivated a reputation for purity, balance, and terroir transparency. He works with meticulous care across some of Beaune’s finest sites, including Les Bressandes and Les Reversées, farming by hand and horse, and vinifying with minimal intervention. His wines are lifted, vibrant, and deeply rooted in place—an authentic reflection of both the land and the steady, grounded philosophy that guides his work.

From a steep, east-facing slope with pebbly clay and limestone soils, this wine presents subtle aromas of black fruits, earth, violets, and spice. The palate is relatively light yet intense, featuring black cherry, earthy notes, and a saline minerality. Aged for 18 months in used oak barrels, it reflects the traditional style of Burgundy, emphasizing finesse over power. Best enjoyed now to 2035+, it pairs beautifully with game meats and aged cheeses.
