Scarzello Giorgio e Figli is a family run estate located in the historic Barolo commune in Piemonte, Italy. The Scarzello family has worked these vineyards for generations, cultivating Nebbiolo on parcels in renowned crus such as Sarmassa and Terlo. The estate follows low intervention viticulture, respecting traditional methods while producing wines that reflect the purity of the Langhe terroir. Federico Scarzello oversees winemaking with a focus on balance, elegance and ageing potential.
The 2019 Barolo Sarmassa is made entirely from hand harvested Nebbiolo grapes from the Sarmassa cru, known for its south facing, clay rich slopes that provide richness, depth and aromatic intensity. The 2019 growing season began with a wet spring that limited fruit set, followed by a warm, steadily dry summer that allowed Nebbiolo to ripen fully, producing small, concentrated berries with ripe tannins and expressive aromatics. Fermentation takes place in open vats with extended skin contact, followed by around two years ageing in large oak casks. The wine shows bright red cherry and raspberry notes with savoury hints of dried herbs, leather and spice, supported by structured, ripe tannins. It captures the distinctive character of Sarmassa with poise, depth and long term ageing potential.
