Tucked away in the secluded village of Reichsfeld—just a few kilometres from bustling Andlau yet worlds apart—Domaine Bohn is a hidden gem rooted in centuries of viticultural heritage. Sheltered by the Ungersberg mountain and shaped by ancient schist, slate, and shale soils, this untouched corner of Alsace has quietly produced exceptional wines since the 12th century. Despite lacking a Grand Cru designation (for purely political reasons), its steep vineyards—once cultivated by Cistercian monks—are undeniably of that calibre, attracting serious interest from major names like Chapoutier.
For over 300 years, the Bohn family has tended these prized slopes, passing down deep-rooted knowledge and a profound respect for the land. Today, Bernard and his son Arthur steward the domaine with a bold, biodiverse philosophy—eschewing tillage, preserving wild flora, and embracing experimental techniques. Arthur’s arrival in 2010 marked a turning point: his talent for crafting vivid, sulphur-free and skin-contact wines has redefined the estate. With a fiercely natural approach and a focus on expressing terroir, his bottlings are full of energy, depth, and authenticity—truly some of Alsace’s most exciting wines.
A 10-day infusion of gewürztraminer whole bunches into a juice of directly pressed gewürz and riesling – the gewürz grows at the bottom of a slope on deeper soil while the riesling comes from slate soils on the prestigious Schieferberg. The wine aged in traditional foudres for a year and delivers vibrant and fruit-forward aromatics.
This is surprisingly poised for a gewürz, the gentle extraction via infusion brought balance and salivating salty bitters, a dynamism enhanced by the Schieferberg riesling. No SO2.
