Domaine des 4 Vents is led by sisters Lucie and Nancy Gauthier, the third generation to tend vines in Villié-Morgon. Over the past decade they have steered the estate toward a more intuitive and sensitive approach, converting to organic farming in 2006 and full biodynamic certification in 2020. Their work centres on expressing the nuance of each parcel in the most direct way possible, using whole bunch ferments, no chaptalisation, no additions, and ageing in either concrete or large old barrels. Though rooted in tradition, their wines carry a sense of quiet clarity and finesse that reflects both the strength of the terroir and the subtlety of their touch.
Alizés is a deeper, more structured expression of Gamay made from 70-year-old vines planted in decomposed granite and blue volcanic soils on the slopes of Morgon. The 2020 vintage was warm and dry, producing small berries with thick skins and plenty of concentration. Fermentation was whole bunch with a slow maceration and a gentle extraction, followed by ageing in large old foudres for around nine months. Bottled without fining or filtration and only a touch of sulphur, the wine is compact and mineral with aromas of black cherry, violets, smoked earth and wild herbs. There is depth and polish to the tannins, with a freshness that keeps everything lifted and focused.
